Tour Description

We will meet at Sky Lake at 7:00am and spend the morning searching for migrating and breeding birds around the bountiful Bruce Peninsula. May is a fantastic time to bird in the area, with an incredible diversity of species. A day's species tally can routinely be between 90-120 species! During the morning we will focus on the west coast of the peninsula between Sauble Beach and Red Bay, focusing on shorebirds and songbirds. The list of possible species is high, including warblers, flycatchers, sparrows, thrushes, sandpipers, ducks and more! We may enjoy good views of colourful species like Scarlet Tanager, Indigo Bunting, Blackburnian Warbler and Baltimore Oriole. The morning will feature a variety of habitat types, including coniferous and mixed forest, freshwater fen, pastureland and marshes. As songbird activity quiets down later in the morning, we will take a break for lunch and enjoy views of Lake Huron search for a variety of waterbirds. In the afternoon we will move away from the lakeshore and explore several productive marshes and fields. Black Tern, Brewer's Blackbird, Least Bittern and Grasshopper Sparrow are on the list of possible birds. May on the Bruce is always packed full of surprises, and we are sure you'll see why this part of Ontario holds a special place in our hearts. Well over 100 species are possible on our days list! Throughout the day we will be offering identification pointers, discussing the magnificent feat of migration, and trying to ensure you get excellent views of the birds that the Bruce Peninsula has to offer. This hike is accessible for those with physical challenges; the trails are well maintained and flat, and a lot of our birds will be along quiet roadsides. We will spend the day birding at a slow and relaxed pace, taking frequent stops along the way. Bathrooms breaks will be roughly every 2 hours. *Notes about the day and things to bring* - We will be traveling by car between stops, so make sure to fill your car up with gas prior to the trip. -bring your own lunch, snacks, and water (keep hydrated!) -bring sunscreen, a hat and clothing that can handle whatever the May weather throws at us!
