Shorebirds and Sparrows of the Bruce

2024 Dates: October 10, 12

  • 90 Canadian dollars
  • Oliphant

Tour Description

We will meet at the Oliphant Marina at 7:30am and spend the morning searching for migrating songbird and shorebird species along the scenic shoreline of Oliphant. This area is home to one of the rarest habitat types in the Great Lakes region, the freshwater coastal fen, and hosts a wide variety of uncommon flora and fauna. During early October this is a great spot to observe the secretive Nelson's Sparrow, as they stop over in the tall grasses in the fens during their migration through the area. Shorebirding can also be quite productive here, with a large variety of plovers and sandpipers on the list of possibilities. This is also a great time of year to observe migrating raptors as well as songbirds such as American Pipit, Lapland Longspur, Purple Finch and Pine Siskin. Throughout the morning we will be offering identification pointers, discussing the magnificent feat of migration, and trying to ensure you get excellent views of the birds that the Bruce Peninsula has to offer. This trip involves up to 3km of walking, sometimes in muddy areas where rubber boots are required. The terrain will be relativity flat though and we will be walking at a comfortable, relaxed pace. Bathrooms breaks will be roughly every 2 hours. This hike will end at 12:30pm. *Notes about the day and things to bring* - We will be traveling by car between stops (around 15km total), so make sure to fill your car up with gas prior to the trip as there is no longer a gas station in Wiarton. -bring your own snacks, and water (keep hydrated!) -bring sunscreen, a hat and clothing that can handle whatever the October weather throws at us! Sometimes it can be quite damp and rainy. -a scope will be provided but feel free to bring your own! - Advice on accommodations and places to eat will be provided after registration
