Tour Description

This hike will start at 7 am at the Park Store parking lot of Rondeau Provincial Park (on the right just after you enter the park). We will spend our morning exploring a number of the best trails around Rondeau Provincial Park, searching for any migratory songbirds that may be in the area. Pelee gets more of the fame when it comes to spring migration in southern Ontario, but Rondeau can be just as good, with a list of over 100 species possible during a May excursion. Prothonotary Warblers nest in the swamps here, and Red-headed Woodpeckers are frequently seen around the park. Other sought after species including Cerulean Warbler, Hooded Warbler, White-eyed Vireo, Yellow-breasted Chat, and Louisiana Waterthrush are on the list of possibilities as well. We will break for lunch at the Visitor Centre, then spend the afternoon on some of the trails we haven't yet visited. We will wrap up the hike at Keith McLean Conservation Area just outside of the park, where we will have a chance to round out our day's list with shorebirds and marsh species. Throughout the day we will be offering identification pointers, discussing the magnificent feat of migration, and trying to ensure you get excellent views of the birds that the area has to offer. This hike is accessible for those with physical challenges; the trails are well maintained and flat. That said, we will be walking a fair bit during the day, so make sure you're up for walking 6-8km. We will spend the day birding at a slow and relaxed pace, taking frequent stops along the way. Bathrooms are spaced throughout the park and easily accessible. *Notes* -Please reserve your day pass for Rondeau Provincial Park ahead of time to ensure you'll get in. You can do this through the Ontario Parks website -bring your own lunch, snacks, and water (keep hydrated!) -bring sunscreen, and a hat. -a scope will be provided, but feel free to bring your own!
