Tour Description

This hike will start at noon on the first day, allowing participants to arrive on the ferry in the morning, or those who arrived the night before to settle in. Our first activity will be exploring the unique Alvar habitats of Pelee Island. These environments are perfect for looking for endemic or rare flora and fauna, such as Blue Racer, Small Mouth Salamander, Yellow-breasted Chat, and Climbing Prairie Rose. After dinner we will meet and walk along the beach on one of Pelee Island's peninsulas in search of migratory songbirds such as Blackburnian Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, American Redstart, Palm Warbler, and Scarlet Tanager. The peninsulas of Pelee Island are also good locations to spot southern specialties that strayed farther north such as, Summer Tanager, White-eyed Vireo, Yellow-throated warbler, and Blue Grosbeak. The chorus of numerous frogs and marsh birds will serenade us back to where we're spending the night, and along the way we will keep an eye out for one of Pelee Island's most sought after specialties: the Grey Fox. The next day we will start at 6am and spend the whole day visiting peak birding and naturalist hotspots across the Island. At some point we will drop by the Pelee Island Bird Observatory to check out their banding station and operations (rubber boots will be required to access this spot). There are so many unique and exciting habitats to visit that we will have a pretty packed adventure! The tour will end the next day at noon. This hike is accessible for those with physical challenges; the trails are well maintained and flat. There is a few hundred meters of sand on the beaches. We will spend the day birding at a slow and relaxed pace, taking frequent stops along the way. Bathroom stops will be spaced throughout the day and easily accessible. *Notes* -the ferry ride to and from Pelee Island will not be covered by this tour, it is your responsibility to book your own transportation to and from the island.
