Tour Description

This outing will begin at the Tilbury Tim Horton's at 8:00am. We will spend the morning exploring several hotspots around Tilbury and the Lake St. Clair shoreline, as well as the St. Clair National Wildlife Area. Early spring is always an exciting time to explore this region, as a lot of spring migrants arrive here before region other parts of southern Ontario. If the weather is favourable we could encounter some early arrivals such as Killdeer, Tree Swallow, Northern Flicker and Yellow-rumped Warbler. The real star of the show here are the waterfowl though, with thousands of geese, ducks and swans staging in the fields and wetlands during migration. Tundra Swans, Northern Pintails, Sandhill Cranes and diving ducks such as Ring-necked Duck, Canvasback and scaup should be especially abundant. In the afternoon we will explore the area around Mitchell's Bay, walking a few short trails and scouring the waterfront for waterfowl and whatever else we can find. Throughout the day we will be offering identification pointers, discussing the natural history of the area and trying to ensure you get excellent views of the birds we encounter. This hike is accessible for those with physical challenges; The majority of our stops will be along quiet roads and well maintained trails, so the terrain will be flat and easy to walk. We will spend the day birding at a slow and relaxed pace, taking frequent stops along the way. Bathrooms breaks will be spaced out every few hours, and for lunch we will eat at picnic tables. *Notes* -Be mindful while driving on the travel roads and watch for potholes. -bring your own lunch, snacks, and water (keep hydrated!) -bring sunscreen, a hat and warm clothing to be conformable birding along the shoreline. -a scope will be provided but feel free to bring your own! -Advice for accommodations and places to eat will be provided after registration.
